HTLP metamorphism and fluid‐fluxed melting during multistage anatexis of continental crust (N Sardinia, Italy)

چکیده

The Variscan high-grade metamorphic basement of northern Sardinia and southern Corsica record lower Carboniferous anatexis related to post-collisional decompression the orogen. Migmatites exposed in Punta Bianca locality (Italy) consist quartz + biotite plagioclase K-feldspar orthogneisses, garnet cordierite-bearing diatexite metatexites, derived from metasediments. Field evidence, petrographic observations, ELA-ICP-MS zircon monazite dating pseudosection modelling suggest that was apparently episodic involving two main stages partial melting. Using modelling, we infer first stage melting is upper amphibolite facies (~0.45 GPa at ~740°C). Cordierite overgrowths replacing sillimanite, combined with composition K-feldspar, followed cooling below solidus low pressures ~0.3 GPa. age anatectic event not precisely constrained because extensive resetting isotopic systems during second stage, yet few zircons preserve a which consistent regional dataset. This migmatitic fabric offset by network pseudotachylyte-bearing faults suggestive greenschist conditions. Garnet/cordierite-bearing diatexites incorporate fragments pseudotachylite-bearing orthogneiss metatexites. Pseudosection indicates nearly isobaric re-heating up ~750°C, further solidus. inferred P–T path crust through extension collapse thickened orogenic crust, (~0.3 GPa) yielding under LP-HT U/Th-Pb ages for migmatites indicate an bound 310–316 Ma suggesting coincident phase crustal shearing. cause high geothermal gradient required unknown but likely requires some heat source probably dissipation mechanical work within crustal-scale shear zones. According this interpretation, peraluminous granite precursors Corsica–Sardinia Batholith could be outcome rather than late-Variscan high-T metamorphism.

Simulations of crustal anatexis: Implications for the growth and differentiation of continental crust

There is overwhelming and incontrovertible petrological and geophysical evidence for the significant role played by mantle-derived mafic magma in the generation and growth of continental crust. Likewise, intrusion of mafic magmas beneath or into continental crust is very likely the major source of enthalpy that drives intracrustal differentiation. A simple dynamical model has been constructed t...

Permeability of the continental crust: dynamic variations inferred from seismicity and metamorphism

The variation of permeability with depth can be probed indirectly by various means, including hydrologic models that use geothermal data as constraints and the progress of metamorphic reactions driven by fluid flow. Geothermal and metamorphic data combine to indicate that mean permeability (k) of tectonically active continental crust decreases with depth (z) according to log k ! )14–3.2 log z, ...

Fluid-driven metamorphism of the continental crust governed by nanoscale fluid flow

The transport of fluids through the Earth's crust controls the redistribution of elements to form mineral and hydrocarbon deposits, the release and sequestration of greenhouse gases, and facilitates metamorphic reactions that influence lithospheric rheology. In permeable systems with a well-connected porosity, fluid transport is largely driven by fluid pressure gradients. In less permeable rock...

Pressure-Temperature-Time Paths of Regional Metamorphism I. Heat Transfer during the Evolution of Regions of Thickened Continental Crust

The development of regional metamorphism in areas of thickened continental crust is investigated in terms of the major controls on regional-scale thermal regimes. These are: the total radiogenic heat supply within the thickened crust, the supply of heat from the mantle, the thermal conductivity of the medium and the length and time scales of erosion of the continental crust. The orogenic episod...
